Groningen is a lively city in the Northern part of the Netherlands. The city has a long, turbulent past which is reflected in its historic city center.

Student city 

Students from the University of Groningen and Hanze University make up about 50.000 out of a total of 250.000 inhabitants of the city of Groningen. The city boasts a vibrant nightlife and pubs and clubs can be found throughout the city. There are no regulated closing hours in Groningen, so clubbing is possible until the early hours.

Cycling City

Groningen is an ultimate cycling city. In 2002, Groningen was elected the Best Biking city of the Netherlands, mainly because the city center is off-limits to most motor vehicles. Besides, in 2022 the city of Groningen was listed as the healthiest city in The Netherlands.

University of Groningen

The University of Groningen, or Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG), is a public research university in the city of Groningen in the Netherlands. The university was founded in 1614 and is the second oldest university in the Netherlands. The university has about 26,000 students, about 10% of them coming from abroad. The University of Groningen is housed in 150 buildings scattered throughout the city and surrounding area.

University Medical Center Groningen

The University Medical Centre of Groningen (UMCG) is one of the biggest hospitals in the Netherlands with over 1300 patient beds and 10.000 employees.

 

The UMCG is specialised in various subjects within the medical field. To date, the UMCG is the only hospital in the Netherlands (and one of the few in the world) to be certified to carry out all types of organ and tissue transplantations. Recently the UMC Groningen Proton Therapy Centre (GPTC) was opened to provide advanced oncologic care. Furthermore, the UMCG is a level 1 trauma centre providing tertiary trauma with a catchment area of over 1.5 million inhabitants in the Netherlands and  Germany.

Research is one of the core principles of the hospital. The presence of unique bio-banks and state-of-the-art research facilities attracts scientists from all around the world.
